Actiontec Shipping 802.11a & 802.11b Products
By Matthew Peretz

December 17, 2001

Actiontec announced today that it is introducing a 802.11a WLAN card that will begin shipping in January. The company also announced last week that it is now shipping its new 802.11b Access Point (AP) with open architecture.

The 802.11a WLAN card is designed to fit devices equipped with a 32-bit Cardbus port, and supports speeds up to 54 Mbps. It uses the Atheros Radio-on-a-Chip technology and is compatible with Win 98/98SE/ME/2000/NT4.0 or Win XP.

The Actiontec 802.11b AP allows customization over a Linux OS, and targets OEMs, VARs, and Systems Integrators seeking to extend the value of their networking software by bundling it with the Actiontec AP. The Linux support enables customization of the AP by the customers ability to load proprietary software on top of the Actiontec software. Actiontec gave examples of the possible software additions including: Security software, Internet sharing, NAT, DHCP, and remote access and control. The AP is Wi-Fi compliant and supports speeds up to 11 Mbps.

The Actiontec AP uses Intersil's PRISM chip set. and is compatible with all of the aforementioned Windows OS with the addition of its support for Linux. Actiontec stated that the AP has an MSRP of $149 with quantity discounts available.
