>> Wi-Fi Planet Marketplace Be a Marketplace Partner Actiontec and Atheros to Deliver 802.11a Products in November By Matthew Peretz October 3, 2001 Atheros Communications, Inc. and Actiontec Electronics, Inc. announced last week that they have several 802.11a products soon to be released to retail channels. Actiontec is developing and manufacturing products based on the Atheros AR5000 WLAN chipset. The AR5000 is an all CMOS chipset featuring what Atheros calls Radio-on-a-Chip technology. It is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.11a standard. In November, the first two Actiontec products that will ship will be the 802.11a Wireless Card and the 802.11a Wireless Access Point (AP). The Wireless Card is designed to be compatible with 32-bit Type II PC Card Slots. The AP can serve as hub and router for scalability and connectivity to other wired and wireless networks. The company reported that the suggested retail prices will be $169 for the Wireless Card and $499 for the AP. In December, Actiontec said it will ship its Mini PCI 802.11a Wireless Card and the Mini PCI 802.11a Wireless Combo Card, which includes a 56K modem. These are designed to enable OEMs and systems integrators to incorporate customized wireless offerings for enterprise customers. Actiontec will customize either card to customer specifications or needs. The Actiontec cards can be used to create ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks or can be used in conjunction with the Actiontec AP. The IEEE 802.11a standard specifies data transfer speeds up to 54 Mbps.
