802.11a Access Point Introduced by Intermec at Networld+Interop
By Matthew Peretz

September 10, 2001

Intermec Technologies Corp., today announced the release of what it claims is the first 802.11a access point. The announcement took place at the Networld+Interop show in Atlanta.

Intermec's new MobileLANaccess 2106 is designed for both the enterprise and small business markets. The 802.11a standard supports speeds up to 54 Mbps under the IEEE specifications and operates between 5.15 and 5.35 Ghz. The company stated that the new access point supports both 802.11b (up to 11 Mbps) and 802.11a, simplifying network migration to the higher speed option.

Intermec claimed that the new 802.11a access point is priced competitively with current, slower, 802.11b products.

The new MobileLANaccess 2106 is also 10/100 Ethernet compatible, enabling users to connect the 2106 to their existing 100 Mbps LAN without any routers or hubs. Intermec also reported that the 2106 is compatible with MobileLAN, its power over Ethernet product.

The new 2106 ships with a MobileLAN access configuration utility CD. Documentation and upgrades are available at the Intermec Web site.
