Requires more authentication steps

Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV) said Monday that it has released a new security application for 802.11b wireless local area networks (WLANs).

Specifically, the company released its Avaya Wireless VPN. The virtual private network is aimed at overcoming some of the serious security flaws that have been uncovered in 802.11b wireless technology. Security experts have said that use of VPNs is one way to overcome those shortcomings.

Avaya said its wireless VPN requires a series of extra steps to authenticate users, which prevents unauthorized users from breaking into the system.

The company provided no pricing or availability information.
