By Matthew Peretz

July 24, 2001

ASUSTeK Computer, Inc., a Taiwan-based manufacturer of computer equipment for the OEM market, announced yesterday the integration of Intersil's PRISM 2.5 chip set into is ASUS WLAN products. Three of the products using the Intersil chip set include an access point, a PCMCIA card, and a home gateway device for small/home office (SOHO).

The ASUS WLAN card for notebook computers is a plug-and-play PCMCIA card, according to the company. It suuports 11 Mbps Wi-Fi and includes network management software.

The ASUS access point, also 11 Mbps, is a hub capable of serving multiple clients via RF. It can function as a bridge to a wired LAN or as a repeater station, extending the effective range of the WLAN. The access point includes a dipole antenna, providing coverage to clients within 1000 unobstructed feet or 300 ft. under normal conditions.

The home gateway is designed to connect a SOHO network to the Internet. Supported protocols include: NAT, PPPoE, DHCP server, DNS proxy, firewall, virtual private network (VPN), and printer sharing. The built-in VPN functionality is what enables the user to effectively create a private WLAN.

According to a May, 2001 report by Cahners In-Stat Group, Intersil is the number one manufacturer of WLAN chipsets. ASUSTeK Computer, Inc., with over $2 billion in annual revenues, has been internationally ranked as one of the top manufacturers in its industry sector.
