Intersil Unveils Fast WLAN Chipset
By allNetDevices Staff

June 19, 2001

Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL) said Tuesday that it is developing a new wireless local area networking (WLAN) chipset that it said will deliver speeds of up to 54Mbps.

Dubbed PRISM Indigo, the chipset complies with the 802.11a 5GHz standard, the company said. The company said that it is aiming the chipset at products developed both for the home and enterprise. Besides developing the hardware, Intersil said the firmware for the chipset will include new security and quality-of-service enhancements that will support multimedia streaming and voice-over-IP applications.

Intersil said that it expected the chipset price for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to be about $35, which should provide low prices to end users. Products based on the chipset will co-exist with existing 2.4Ghz 802.llb products, according to the company.

The company said it will provide samples of the chipset in the fourth quarter.
